Foster Guidelines

FIRST DAYS:

WATER INTAKE: THESE DOGS MAY COME DEHYDRATED, MAKE SURE THEY DRINK IN SMALL INCREMENTS AS NEEDED THROUGHOUT THE DAY/EVENING.

FEEDING: THESE DOGS MAY NOT HAVE EATEN FOR 24-48 HOURS. FEED 1 CUP KIBBLE WITH WARM WATER UPON ARRIVAL TO YOUR HOME. ANOTHER CUP BEFORE BED. INCREASE AMOUNT OF FOOD OVER A FEW DAYS. SOMETIMES A VERY SMALL AMOUNT AT MID-DAY FOR THE VERY THIN DOGS WILL BENEFIT THEM. BASIC AMOUNT OF FOOD PER SIZE OF DOG:
UP TO 55 LBS (1 ½ CUPS)
UP TO 75 LBS ( 2 CUPS )
UP TO 100 + LBS (2 ½ TO 3 CUPS)

PER FEEDING WITH LOTS OF WARM WATER. IT’S A SLOW PROGRESS UP TO FULL CAPACITY.

POTTY: BE PREPARED FOR ACCIDENTS WHILE YOU FOSTER. WHEN YOU BRING YOUR FOSTER INTO YOUR HOUSE, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE HIM/HER ON LEASH AND LET THEM SNIFF THE WHOLE HOUSE, THEN, TAKE THEM TO WHERE YOU WANT THEM TO POTTY AND PRAISE, PRAISE PRAISE! TAKE OUT BEFORE BEDTIME. THESE DOGS HAVE SLEPT THROUGH THE NIGHT AT THEIR KENNELS. IF THEY GET UP DURING THE NIGHT, TELL THEM TO LIE DOWN AND GO TO SLEEP. THEY MAY WANT TO GO AGAIN VERY EARLY IN THE A.M. BE READY WITH LEASH NEAR BY, AND WALK THEM OUT SO YOU WILL NOT HAVE ACCIDENT ON THE WAY OUT.

BACKYARD SAFETY: YOUR NEW FOSTER HAS NEVER HAD FULL ACCESS TO A YARD AND CAN EASILY GET INTO TROUBLE. PLEASE DO NOT LET YOUR GREY ROAM IN YOUR YARD, ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT WITHOUT SUPERVISION. WE SUGGEST THE FIRST TWO DAYS HE SHOULD BE ON A LEASH OUTSIDE TO DO POTTY. IF HE DOESN'T WANT TO POTTY ON LEASH STAY NEAR BY UNTIL FINISHED AND ALSO USE THIS TIME TO PRAISE! NEVER LET YOUR GREY OUT AT NIGHT IN YOUR YARD BY HIMSELF AND OR WITH YOUR DOGS.

WALKING: EACH DAY YOUR FOSTER SHOULD BE WALKED IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD OR TAKEN TO A PUBLIC AREA WHERE HE/SHE WILL BE EXPOSED TO EVERYDAY LIFE. PARKS OR PETCO/ ANY PET STORE IS A GREAT PLACE TO EXPOSE THEM TO DIFFERENT TYPES OF INTERACTION. EXERCISE (WALKING) IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR THE NEW GREYS AND NEEDS TO BE DONE. IT HELPS KEEP THEIR ENERGY LEVEL DOWN AND IS HEALTHY FOR THEM. DOG PARKS ARE DISCOURAGED. THEY ARE NOT SAFE FOR THE GREY OR OTHER DOGS.

TETHERING: ALSO REMEMBER THAT A GREYHOUND CAN AT NO TIME BE TIED UP BY THE NECK TO A TREE OR A CLOTHES LINE OR ANY TYPE OF FIXTURE. A HOUND CAN REACH FULL SPEED IN THREE STRIDES AND CAN INJURE HIMSELF/HERSELF SEVERELY IF HE/SHE TAKES OFF. ALSO ATTACHING A TIE ON A HARNESS IS NOT SAFE AS GREYS CAN BACK OUT OF A HARNESS EASILY AND BE GONE IN A FLASH.

SPAYS: YOUR FOSTER DOG MAY COME WITH STICHES FROM HER SPAY. WE SHOULD HAVE INFO AS TO WHEN THAT OCCURED SO WE CAN TELL YOU WHEN THE STICHES NEED TO BE REMOVED IF NOT DISOLVABLE. WE CAN HELP YOU WITH THAT IF YOU ARE NOT SURE HOW TO REMOVE THEM. PLEASE CHECK INCISION AND IF EVER RED OR INFLAMED NOTIFY US IMMEDIATELY.

SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS: A CORNER IN YOUR BEDROOM IS PROBABLY THE BEST PLACE FOR YOUR NEW FOSTER. THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN ALONE AND WILL FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE WITH YOU NEAR BY. IF YOUR GREY DOES NOT WANT TO SETTLE DOWN I SUGGEST PUTTING A EX PEN IN FRONT OF THEIR BED SO THEY WILL BE CONTAINED BUT NOT CLOSED IN.

SHYS AND SPOOKS: PLEASE BE AWARE THAT SOME GREYS ARE EXTREMELY SHY OR EXHAUSTED FROM THEIR LONG HAUL. THEY ARE BEST SERVED BY LEAVING THEM ALONE IN A QUIET AND SAFE CORNER OF YOUR BEDROOM ON A NICE SOFT BED AND A LITTLE WATER NEAR BY. THEY NEED A SAFE PLACE TO GET THEIR CONFIDENCE. IT MAY TAKE A FEW DAYS. YOUR FOSTER MAY REQUIRE A HARNESS IF THE RUN BACKWARDS ON LEASH.. LET US KNOW. WE’LL PROVIDE ONE FOR YOU.

TICKS: ALTHOUGH WE HAVE BATHED ALL THE DOGS BEFORE COMING TO YOUR HOME, PLEASE CHECK FOR TICKS BY RUNNING YOUR HANDS FROM HEAD TO TAIL TO FEEL FOR ANY SMALL BUMPS. ALSO LOOK BETWEEN TOES. REMOVE ugh!! FLUSH DOWN TOILET OR PUT IN ALCOHOL. THERE ARE TICK REMOVERS YOU CAN PURCHASE AT PET STORE FOR HANDS OFF REMOVAL!! ALSO IF NEEDED APPLY FRONTLINE, GC WILL PROVIDE FRONTLINE.

GOING AWAY?
IF A FOSTER FAMILY NEEDS TO GO OUT OF TOWN OR LEAVE FOR A PERIOD OF TIME AND NEEDS A BACK UP FOSTER, PLEASE NOTIFY THE FOSTER HOME COORDINATOR .

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES CAN A FOSTER HOME LEAVE THEIR HOUND WITH “FAMILY” A “FRIEND” OR “NEIGHBOR”. THIS IS FOR THE SAFETY OF THE HOUND SINCE MOST NON GREY OWNERS DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE NEEDS AND SAFETY ISSUES OF OUR GREYS.gclogosm2

LOVE: GIVE LOTS!!! :)

THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMITMENT TO HELP OUR GREYS TRANSITION INTO THEIR NEW LIFE!
